I love to paint pansies. Pansies and roses are probably my favorite flowers. I like sunflowers too but pansies are so colorful. Color is king I think. :) This is one of my few flow blue pieces. Wish I had more but they are pretty expensive so I buy the Wabi Sabi ones. I pick these up where I can. Usually they are chipped or the lid is missing or something. This sugar bowl has no lid but it makes a perfect flower pot. I like Wabi Sabi things. If you don't know what Wabi Sabi means, here it is in a nutshell: Wabi-Sabi is a traditional Japanese idea based onthe acceptance of transience. It also means seeing beauty in imperfection,impermanence, incompletion and decay. This sort of beauty can be found both innature and in man-made things.  Thanks for visiting my blog today!

Well, Ok, yesterday's post was a little bit of a downer. Sorry about that....today's another day and I finished my rose painting this morning. Then I did another auction piece and it's posted above. Starting bid is $50.00!

I received another question about color, "why do you like Rembrandt?" from my friend Gaye.
I've tried a lot of different brands but Rembrandt is one of my favorites. For one thing, I like to mix most of my colors and I just find that this brand works for me. Also, Rembrandt is a well respected high quality paint for professionals that will stand the test of time. I also like the consistency and because of it's pigment and it's creaminess, I find that much of the time I don't need a medium. When I do use a medium, it's usually Liquin or Gamblin Galkyd slow dry, or Galkyd lite depending on the drying time I want. Liquin and Galkyd lite tend to speed up drying time whereas Galkyd Slow dry and Gamblin Neomeglip tend to slow the drying time which gives you more working 'wet on wet' time.
I also like Gamblin and Winsor Newton paints. For me Holbein is too transparent.

For Auld Lang Syne

Dear Friends, I painted on my rose floral this morning but did not finish it. I have actually been on an emotional roller coaster today as my son, John, packed his belongings into his car and headed off to Austin where he starts his first real job tomorrow morning as a recent computer science graduate. He has a bright future ahead of him and I'm so happy for him. I helped him pack. Then we waved him away. Then this sadness came. For those of you that have also done this, you understand......... and I know it will pass.

He's left before many times, but that was different. Somehow this time seems final even though I know he'll be back to visit and he isn't that far away. (thank goodness)

I have actually waved 3 others goodbye. What is it though, about the last one? Many things I suppose that I won't go into further. But it reminded me of the song that we sing this time of year so I leave you with the words and a posting of a painting from 2011. I'll finish my roses tomorrow - I am taking it slow but still trying to keep it fresh and loose-and will post it for you then. In the meantime, here is a painting from 2011 and a note below about my green mixing theory....for what it's worth. Thanks as always for stopping by!

"New Year's Gift"

PS Thanks so much to Dana for leaving that nice comment. Dana, For my greens, I usually always mix them from Ultramarine Blue and the yellows-I mix it up. Ultramarine and Indian Yellow makes a wonderful dark, transparent olive green that is so common in earthy greens in nature (I think.). Then I lighten with one of my cad yellows on my palette. The Rembrandt Cad Yellow light mixture makes a nice middle green depending on how much yellow you use. The lemon makes a really nice cooler green-then I modify with white, adding more yellow or blue back in to get the color I need. I hope this makes sense...

I sometime alternate Indian Yellow with a Gamblin Transparent Orange which, with blue makes an ever darker olive green. The inner most parts of foliage sometimes has this olive, earth green. I also alternate my blues at times and use cobalt instead of the Ultramarine when making greens. Richard Schmid suggests making color charts with all the colors on the palette that you like so that you know ahead of time what they are going to look like when you need them. You can find this info in his book, "Alla Prima, Everything I know about Painting" which you can purchase off his website at www.RichardSchmid.com.

Hi Friends, Well, I did paint today even after I woke up not feeling wonderfully....with a little sore throat. I have made it through the day though thanks to ibuprofen...-didn't make it to church which I usually do on Sunday morning but watched In Touch with Charles Stanley instead on TV. It was very good...... If my studio had been anywhere else but home, I probably would not have attempted to make it there but since I already had these beautiful flowers sitting waiting on me, I at least pushed some paint around. Here is my progress. The flowers that were sitting in the kitchen (1st photo) were so pretty. My husband had brought them in from the yard, but I did not want to attempt to paint the whole lot, so I took several out and put them in a smaller vase in the studio. (2nd photo) I thought I would show you my progress and hopefully will finish this tomorrow. I hope this painting turns out and we'll see how I feel tomorrow! At any rate, I painted and that was my goal today. Wish me luck and thanks for checking in! Now off to finish the black eyed peas. I have to feed my son who leaves for his new job in Austin tomorrow!

Winter Pansies

Pansies are a favorite flower of mine because they are just so colorful. As my mentor :) Richard Schmid says, "you can almost paint them with colors straight from the tube". I am very very very very happy to be painting! And I will paint tomorrow Lord Willing!! You know, they say that what you do on the first day of the year determines what you will be doing the rest of the year as well...so if you are an artist...I do hope we all can get in our studios tomorrow! "Moon Rise" 5x7 Plein air, Teton Valley, October 2011

Hi Friends, Today I start posting again. The holidays are almost over and a lot has happened in the past few months. Some of it has been art related, but there have also been family related events. After traveling to Jackson Hole and painting in early October, to Atlanta in mid October for the AWA show, and then to Louisiana to paint for a week on the bayou, the holidays were here and I went on a cooking spree (not intentional!). Kids and family were here for Thanksgiving and right afterward our son John graduated from Baylor University. I spent a good amount of time compiling a photo book for him (24/7 to be exact). It was a book of photos from his 'babyhood to adulthood'. My gift to him for graduation. It was an obsession once I got started! Then I sent the book off to blurb.com for publishing. It turned out great and I recommend that publishing software. I am actually thinking about writing and self publishing an instructional art book but that will be later...John has landed a job, our daughter is moving and Christmas....I'm tired! I hope you all had a fun filled holiday! I am really looking forward to getting back to work. I am learning to be flexible I think. I knew some of these things were going to take place and one reason why I chose not to put a time limit on my 50/50 project. I have 6 paintings to finish the project. And it's this time of year when we artists get achance to show just how strong we are. It's not surprising that most charityfundraisers back their carts up to the Santa Season. When you think of it, welove doing the work--one fine way to help a children's hospital, a dancecentre, a small village in Africa, or further research toward a cure forcancer.

Then there are the little gifts we give on ourown. I like the unwrapped, offhand ones--perhaps a small painting or drawing givenwith no clatter on the roof, no cookie crumbs to clean up. I think Santa likesto hear about these little services--and besides, it lessens his load.

More than anything, a gift that happens to bepersonally crafted by the giver is most likely to be a treasure to thereceiver. It seems these days that Santa's up-north workshop, once hands-on andall abuzz with creative elves, has now been transmogrified into a Chinese factory.All the more reason to get out your brushes and chisels. "It is when yougive of yourself," said Kahlil Gibran,"that you truly give."

Wow is life busy. I almost made the mistake of saying, particularly if you have a family, but I know that isn't necessarily the case. If you live in today's world and are trying to make a living-whether you have a family or not, you are most probably as busy as I am. I so would like to move from Houston and have a cottage in the country with a lovely studio! I am praying for that for the future. Right now, today, though...I painted. Yeah. Here is the painting I produced and I hope you like it. It is up for bid and this is the first of just a few paintings that I have left to finish my 50/50 project. I will be counting today to see what I need to do to finish but I think it's about 10...I'll be trying to get these online and up for sale between now and Christmas. Take care out there! Hi Friends! These are both plein air studies of the Louisiana bayou. I've painted in this spot for several years in a row and no matter how many times you paint this spot, it's always different. That's one of the great things about painting on location in my mind-trying to capture that particular moment in time that will never be again.... Monet gave us a glimpse of this when he painted his water lilies on different days under all kinds of light conditions and situations. His hay bales also were painted over and over again while he examined color and light. I try to remember some of the things he said:

Paint what you really see, not what you think you ought to see; not the object isolated as in a test tube, but the object enveloped in sunlight and atmosphere, with the blue dome of Heaven reflected in the shadows. (Claude Monet)

Going Going Gone!

Going, Going, Gone!

Well Hi Everyone, As the name of this post implies, I have been going, going, going. Wow. Time to stay home and get some things done here. The following are studies that I have done on recent plein air trips. What a great opportunity to be able to paint outside in the open air. Whenever I look at these studies, I can remember the exact time of day, the way I felt, the smells, the sounds, the wonderful encounters with people and otherwise....(critters). The top painting is the beautiful Louisiana bayou as was the last study of the marsh. The middle study (not the greatest photo) was from the Teton Valley near a place called Moose Creek. The weather that day could not decide on whether to be cloudy, rainy, or sunny so I stuck with the first thing I got when I set up to paint, cloudy with sprinkles. I wore my friend Kathy's bear bells that day....and was on constant lookout for them. They are everywhere. There is some discussion between locals there whether the bear bells let the bears know you are there and to stay away from humanoids or whether they send the message...'hm there is a human around with backpack and food!'. So I kept my eyes pealed. :) Next week I'll be working on 'tweaking' some of my other studies done last month and also I will start to post my small works to finish off my 50 / 50 project..just in time for Christmas. Hi Friends! Well, here is one small study I did when I was on my recent trip to Jackson Hole Wyoming. Did I tell you how beautiful it was there? I think so....:) I have been traveling a lot lately-Jackson Hole, then last weekend I was at the annual AWA show in Atlanta. What great paintings and wonderful time. Our show was at the Huff Harrington Fine Art Gallery. Thank you Huff Harrington! Next year we will be in Tucson at the Sonoran Desert Museum! Sunday, I will be leaving for Louisiana, my last trip for the year. I have been to Louisiana the past 4 years. The bayou is a beautiful place to paint and the subject matter very different. But in time, I'll be posting some of the work from that trip as well. Today I worked on a couple of the studies I did in Wyoming and will be posting those soon also. I will also be getting back to my 50/50 project to complete the last 10 paintings for that so please stay tuned. As always, thanks for allowing me into your digital life!

The Grand Tetons-some of my photos

Hi There Friends,

I am back from Jackson Hole Wyoming. What a wonderful trip it was! Needless to say the trip came to an end too soon. There are so many paintings to be painted and such beauty there! I hope you can visit the Grand Teton National Park at some time if you have never been able to. This was my first visit but I hope to go back. We are so blessed to live in a country that has such preserved beautiful land and scenery. While traveling to Europe is exciting and wonderful, the good old USA has so much to offer. I will be posting some of my plein air paintings completed there in the coming days and weeks. I'll also be finishing my 50/50 project, with 10 paintings approximately to go. I love to collect old dishes and I have several of these small china sugar bowls, creamers, and tea cups. Some are so intricate and it is a real challenge to paint them and get the character of each one. This one is so pretty and paper thin, I wish you could see it in person! The Power of Art to do Good!

Hi Friends, Well I cannot believe I have let so much time go by since I posted the last time. I have been extremely busy though. I have been working on some larger pieces and trying to get some work done for a couple of shows coming up. I have also been shipping some...two paintings for 2 shows that I am fortunate enough to be in. I will be happy to share that info with you if you are interested in a later blog...but today I would like to tell you that this little painting. This is one of my 50/50 works however I have decided to do this one a little differently. Instead of starting the bid at $50.00, I've decided to start at $100.00. The reason for this is that this one is for a great cause...all of the net proceeds (winning bid less shipping) will go to the efforts to help the children in Somalia through World Vision. www.worldvision.org World Vision is a fiscally responsible organization that is instrumental in helping children all over the world in poor circumstances. I have had the privilege to sponsor children through them for the last 15 years. The child that I am sponsoring now is from the Philippines...Anna Mae. :) I began her sponsorship when she was 6...now she is 16 and about to graduate! Finished painting "Summer's Music" and Other things

Thank you all so much for the nice comments on this painting! Yeah. I had thought about using it for my painting for the AWA show in Atlanta in October but I have one more idea for a larger piece that I might try first....this is the finish. I've been looking at it for a while on my easel to make sure it's ok. It's so hard for me to even know if I think it is show worthy amidst so many other wonderful paintings. And of course to sell it would be nice. :) At any rate, thank you for the comments. I added a couple more flowers because I felt the painting needed them on the right side above the pitcher. It felt too bare there, in fact my husband mentioned that too so we were both thinking it. But now I am thinking I might remove the blue plumbago on the sheet music but haven't decided yet. I took this photo outside, inside, and all around trying to get the best color naturally. Just so happens that one of Robert Genn's latest letters was on taking photos. I'm tired. Long day and long few days and not enough time to paint!!! Ugh. Life is busy and it seems that too often it's painting that goes by the wayside unless I just absolutely let a lot of things go which I plan to do in the next few days. It's also difficult with so many distractions to really produce work that you are proud of. For those other artists out there I am sure you feel the same way sometimes. But I have decided to just post what I am really very happy with. That's why you haven't heard from me in a few days. But I figure if it takes me a year to finish my project, I'll be practicing and that was the idea in the first place....on a brighter note, this is my 34th study. Thanks for hangin' in there with me!! :)

Oh the joys and headaches of painting....somedays it's there and others it's just not. Somedays I think I would have been better off using my painting as target practice! Ever feel that way? The creative process is something that is so abstract and undefinable that it's virtually impossible (for me at least) to put it into words. I found a blog thanks to my friend Wanda and was reading it last night that more appropriately states what I am feeling right now. The artist basically states how absurd it seems what we spend our time, days, hours doing this thing and that the creative process can be maddening.

There is an art… or rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

He continues with one of the best descriptions of art-making I have every heard:

The first part is easy. All it requires is simply the ability to throw yourself forward with all your weight, and the willingness not to mind that it’s going to hurt. That is, it’s going to hurt if you fail to miss the ground. Most people fail to miss the ground, and if they are really trying properly, the likelihood is that they will fail to miss it fairly hard. Clearly, it is the second part, the missing, which presents the difficulties.

These are my youngest son's cowboy boots when he was a little boy. He used to wear them on the wrong feet! Talk about cute. We still laugh about that today. But the really funny thing is that he also wore..with the boots of course...his batman cape. Never went anywhere without the two! I have pics of him on the couch sound asleep-batman cape and boots and all. Those were the days.. I guess I should have named this painting 'those were the days?' Anyway, I am glad I kept them because now I can paint them. Maybe tomorrow I'll paint my daughter's ruby slippers. :) They are also quite worn.

On another note, I got a note from my son today (my #1 son) He had a Theodore Roosevelt quote for us...

I am teaching a workshop next month through the local art league on how to set up a blog. I have been tossing around ideas in my head about why we do this. This is not one of my 50/50 paintings but I wanted to post and say hi! I am trying to remember that fall is not that far away! It's hot.....Hope all of you out there had a wonderful Sunday-and restful-whatever you did. We went to church this morning and then spent the day with our lovely daughter, our awesome son and his sweet girlfriend, and our really nice summer guest who is staying with us while he interns at a local computer corporation until mid August. It's been a full day but very nice. Sometimes I have to get away from the art world for a while-and I miss it-but my family is #1 in my heart I have to say...as much as I do love painting. Through the good times and the bad-it's all good in the end. I am thankful today. And thankful for you as well. God Bless and blessings this week!

On Friday mornings I paint with a local artist's group and we hire a model. It's great practice in painting the head and figure but it's a struggle for me. These ladies (there were 2 today, together!!) were such great models and you sooo want to capture the beauty in those faces....one of these days I hope to be able to capture just a little of that beauty on canvas. We keep plugging away.

I have heard it said that it is not what you paint but how you paint it. I don't know if that is true or not but there are many times, even though I love to paint still life that I have felt like I don't quite measure up as an artist because I love to paint still life. I do paint other subjects and if you are interested in seeing some of those, they are on my website, but I think this subject is my favorite. I'm a Little Teapot!

Ok, I am really happy with this little painting and I almost didn't post it tonight. I thought about putting it in my kitchen instead! Where the teapot sits....I like painting this teapot and what is it about still life?? I just like still life....a lot. But I do love landscapes too. Did I tell you I am going to Wyoming in Sept, October to paint??? Also to Brice Canyon??!!!! Big Woo Hoo. I am excited. I am also excited about the colors I am playing with and I did try to use that new color idea on this-maybe not totally but I am getting there somewhat. Anyway. Thanks so much for visiting my blog. I have several flow blue dishes. They are difficult for me to paint..but fun also. I was a bit happy with this one. Thank you for visiting my blog!!

I promised to tell you a few things about the Munsell Color Wheel but we went on a long long drive this weekend and got home late last night so I have not had a chance to fully read my book (car sick if I read in the car! Ugh!) Anyway, if you are interested in the book it's called, 'A Color Notation, an Illustrated System of Defining Color and Their Relationships'. Purchased very cheaply through www.half.com! Honestly though, it's basically about experimenting with compliments other than those we were taught in school. I am posting some pics of the traditional color wheel as well as that of the Munsell Color Wheel so that you can see the difference. I am having a lot of fun doing this and am playing with a lot of different colored backgrounds etc. I plan on posting one of the newer paintings on the site tomorrow night. So here is the traditional color wheel pic:

And Here is a couple of pics of the Munsell Color Theory wheels where you can see the compliments are not quite the same. With this one, you could actually use a turquoise background with a pair of red apples or push it one way or the other. I find this interesting and a bit hard to put to use. But it's fun also!

I read an interesting article yesterday sent to my inbox - the Robert Genn newsletter. Basically the article talked about the art of fishing and how it parallels to painting-it takes a long time to really understand what it is all about and to acquire the necessary skills. It requires patience and more patience...a constant trying and working to really understand the craft...got my Munsell book today. Looking forward to sharing more of those insights with you....

Well, I have wandered across another Blog Radio show that I think might be informative. So I am attaching the link here for anyone that might be interested: http://www.artistmentorsonline.com/?cat=44.

Today I actually listened to Clint Watson and also Kevin MacPherson on the blog radio program mentioned a few days ago…look for that info below…anyway, both programs were excellent but I’ve decided to listen at lunch or at night though…no more listening while painting. :)

The above link FYI has an article about our current economy which I find interesting…so lest you think you are the only one out there struggling to buy materials, etc., read this article. I have several of these pretty little french limoges tea pots, creamers and pitchers. They are fun to paint and I love putting them together and seeing what happens....

Today I experimented with some color changes and I plan to post one of those tomorrow night. I listened to the blog radio by Carol Marine. She was talking about the Munsell Color wheel. It was great fun experimenting with that-if you haven't heard of Munsell, I'll post a link where you can read a little about it (below). Last night I was scouring the internet for some inspiration. Do you ever just feel out of sync? Maybe it's spiritual...I think I need to start reading some morning devotionals again before starting my day. I have been jumping into painting without doing that mostly to get started before the house gets noisy. I like quiet. Anyway, I ran across these podcasts.....they are great and you need to listen to these, guys. There are a year's worth of them and I have only listened to two, but they are really great, full of inspiration and information too. So......I am excited to say that I have been wanting to experiment for a while and now feel like I am going to be doing just that. I don't know about this....my work may look exactly the same but maybe just better?? I have been reading a lot about color theory and will share those thoughts with you in the coming days but for right now, please, if you are in need of some inspiration for your art, click on the link below. I am having a lot of fun painting these small paintings. I am finding that morning is a great time for me to have coffee and paint until the day even starts while I am fresh. I have several rose bushes, several different colors. Here in Texas it is very hot right now and so the roses tend to be small. These are knock out roses. Have a wonderful 4th!

I painted today, Mother's Day, May 8, 2011.... and was remembering my Mom. My mom passed away at the age of 48. I was 17 and a senior in high school. I have been thinking about her today mostly because this is mother's day and mine hasn't been so great. So, I've been feeling a bit sorry for myself. I won't go into the gory details. I think those of us who are wives and mother's have had those.....so there is no need to talk about it. Needless to say that when I was growing up, I know for sure that I took my mom for granted and now that I am older, I realize what a gift she was. She was so special, sweet. She was funny, pretty, a gifted singer with a beautiful voice even though she never believed in herself. She said she wanted to be a dancer....but got married and had kids instead. Sound familiar? I loved her more than I ever told her. Anyway, for those moms out there that are having a great day or a bad one, this too shall pass. God Bless You. Love to all, Judy

I usually don't paint this large outdoors but I decided this day I would try and was pretty happy that I did complete this 16x20 in one sitting. I think I will be doing this more often because it forces you to work quickly and to not be able to 'futz' with too many details. Is that a word?

"That Old Sweet Story"

I have a story to tell you. This is a true story that has just happened to me. About a month and a half ago, I was sitting in church and the minister began telling this story about when he and his wife moved to the Houston area. They had found a house they wanted to purchase that was within their budget. But they realized they needed a couple of new appliances and they didn't have anything left in the budget for those. So they sat down as a family with their two daughters. One of the little girls said "Dad, why don't you just ask God for the money we need?" So they did, right then and there. The very next next, they received an anonymous sum in the mail for the exact amount they had asked for. Well, I was sitting there listening to this story and I have asked for things myself including money and so I was very cynical about this. I felt bad about asking God for money even if I did need it.... But mostly I was cynical. I actually thought to myself, yea, right, this has never happened to me.

This has been a really tough year for me and I won't go into the gory details, but it has been one of the hardest of my life really. In fact, the last few years haven't been a picnic. Anyway..I am ashamed to say that this is what I was feeling in my heart. I really needed a certain sum too because of the fact that the art market is down and I was behind on some things that really needed to be paid. So I decided, well what would it hurt to ask...so I did.

The very next day I received an email from a woman who had purchased a painting from me through one of my galleries several years ago for her daughter. She named the painting and I remembered it right away. It was a painting of toys called "Toy Thyme". In the email, she told me she had found me on the net and that she was very interested in purchasing some of my work. We corresponded back and forth a few times and I sent her more images of work that I didn't have on my site. Long story short, she ended up purchasing 13 paintings from me. I shipped the work last week. I was able to pay off in it's entirety a credit card bill that has been looming over my head. I'll never doubt again that He answers prayer. I don't always have my prayers answered and I am not sure why this one in particular was because like I said, I've asked before. But I've been so down lately...perhaps this is why? Perhaps God knows I really really needed to hear from Him in a big way...I don't know why, But it was and I just hope that this encourages someone out there that if you really are in need....Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened. (Matthew 7:7) God answers prayer. God Bless and Merry Christmas.

Painted at the Wenmoh's Ranch, Cypress Mill Texas in May. I painted this one from my computer monitor.

The sky was beautiful this day and my friend Dena Wenmohs and I took a lot of photos at her ranch. It was the day before my workshop there was to begin. The last day of the workshop, it was cloudy, threatening rain so we painted inside Dena's studio (barn) from my computer monitor. I plan to do a large one of this painting. I have not painted a large still life for a while. Haven't painted anything large for a while. I have been feeling very down about the economy. When things aren't going the way we plan or think even though we are trying our best, it's difficult to get motivated. A call from Jim McDonald asking me to join his "art party", talking to my friend Nancy and some other little "God sends" have made me rethink my attitude about the whole thing. Also helping my friend Eleanor with her blog has made me realize we just have to stay in the saddle and keep trying. I wasn't all that happy with this painting. It feels a little cool but it's ok and for a large work in a while I guess I am just happy to have it completed. I'll see if it is a keeper I guess after the honeymoon is over.

This was my demonstration for my class yesterday. It's amazing I was able to complete it. I wasn't going to but it wasn't working and so it was suggested by my students to put in the flowers. Then they really wanted to see it finished so I trudged through.
