Moonshine Picnic

"Moonshine Picnic" 12x16

It's hot here in Texas!  The watermelon stands are in abundance alongside the country roads.  I have one in the fridge I'll be cutting tonight and will leave some over to paint tomorrow...the above painting entitled Moonshine Picnic was done a couple years ago and is so named because a small town near me-Glenrose (where the painting is now hanging in the White Buffalo Gallery)-is evidently supposed to be the moonshine capitol of Texas!

Here's a little history from the online "Glenrose Reporter":
"The wooded limestone hills around Glen Rose feel quiet and look postcard-pretty today. But in the 1920s during the height of Prohibition, the hills were alive with stills.
Illegal whiskey known as moonshine -- so named because it was often made in secret and at night by the light of the moon -- flowed, and so did big money.
Somervell County Moonshiners, merchants and lawmen were “in cahoots” to make large amounts of whiskey for export to Dallas, Fort Worth, and beyond. Trucks filled with bootleg whiskey rolled out of the county bound for thirsty customers in Dallas and Houston."
So happy Summer and stay cool!

From Sea to Shining Sea

"New England Charm"
8x10 oil on linen panel

New England Charm was painted last November 'en plein air' in lovely Bennington Vermont.
One thing that impressed me when I was visiting there was the number of American Flags that were flying outside so many homes.

I am very thankful for our freedom which maybe we take for granted too often perhaps??...Freedom to attend the church of our choice, freedom to speak our minds-and to publish it.  I think along with Freedom comes Responsibility tho.  Responsibility means being respectful when we speak our minds and how we take advantage of our freedom.  It doesn't give us an open door to say exactly everything that comes into our heads-things that can destroy another person's spirit.  In my heart and mind it means remembering what the Bible says about the tongue-and how it can injure beyond compare. Proverbs 12:18
"Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing."
God Bless and Happy 4th!

Bluebonnet Country

"Bluebonnet Country"  16x20
oil on canvas

A couple of years ago, before we moved to our more northern locale, I loved to go out and see and paint the bluebonnets.  In Texas, bluebonnet season is usually around March - April...but only lasts two weeks sometime during those months.  I used to drive about an hour to Brenham, Chapel Hill, Bellville, Texas and beyond.  The bluebonnets stretch from Houston west and in years where there was abundant rainfall the year before, it can be a glorious sight to see.  The year I took this photo was one of those years.  I painted a lot plein air that year but this one was actually done from a photo-something I don't really care to do but I was happy with the result of this one.  Usually I overwork studio landscapes (particularly bluebonnets-it's so easy to get soo picky with these).  I hope you enjoy and thanks for looking!
