Summer Sun

"Summer Sun" 20x16 oil on canvas

I finished this painting yesterday and had a lot of fun doing it. I have a large window in my studio and I have found that if I put my still life right in front of the window, I get all this beautiful light shining through and back lighting my subject. I then placed a spotlight next to the still life as well to accentuate the flowers and water pitcher more. This was a fun painting. I will be posting a small study I did of these roses later.

Thanks for visiting my blog.

Southwest Pottery with Carnations

Southwest Pottery and Carnations is a 10x8 painting done on linen canvas panel. I am proud of this painting. I think this is one of my better ones even though I don't get a lot of comments on it. I think that is because of the color??

Romeo and Juliette Rose

This cigar box is called Romeo y Julietta. This is a beautiful cigar box with a varnished and stained exterior. The painting itself is linen glued to board and comes with a stand for the painting, brushes used, and palette knife. I am having a lot of fun with these.

Summer Wildflowers and Silver

Silver and metals are challenging to paint but fun also. These are flowers I picked along side the road. There is not much growing in the middle of August here in Houston. It's just plain hot if it's not a torrential downpour. Next week I will be buying some flowers so please check back with me.

Flow Blue

I love painting creamers, sugar bowles, pitchers, stuff. I am not sure why but visiting flea markets and antique stores are a must when you love painting stuff. :) I found this sugar bowl in a large flea market, picked it up and accidentally dropped the lid. Fortunately for me I glued the top back together and can paint it anyway! (don't look for the cracks, you won't find them) I think I was in one of those shops that said "you break it you buy it". That's okay, I would have anyway. I love the shape. It's graceful and the blue is very pretty. I am not sure if it is an original flow blue.

This painting is sold. Thanks for looking!

Rosey Hydrangeas

This painting started as a demonstration for my class, however I finished it on my own time. I love to paint flowers from life. There are so many color variations that a photo cannot capture. Hydrangeas in particular. This flower is a particular challenge to capture the likeness while still keeping it simple.

Thanks for looking. If you might be interested in this work, please email me or call me.

Creative Color

This is a fun little study that reminds me of my daughter. She is very creative and loves to make things. She sews, plays the violin beautifully, and makes crafts for her friends for Christmas. She always has a project going. I think I borrowed some of this thread from her. She is a wonderful young woman who is almost finished with her BS in Biology. I guess these creative projects help her relax when she's not studying.

Heart of Provence

After my workshop in Provence this May, I stayed to paint for two weeks. Everyone had gone. I rented a car and tootled around the countryside, got lost a couple of times and almost was run over by a few irritated French drivers. But... I did run across some really beautiful landscapes. This is a vineyard that I drove past one day during the brief time when it was a little sunny near a town called Gordes. In the painting, the field of blue is more violet. I still need to work on my photo skills. Thanks for looking. I have this painting at my studio right now but will send the pic to my gallery in Santa Fe to see if they would like to have it. If anyone out there in internet land is interested, please contact me via email or phone.

The Shabby Rose

My studio is located in Old Town Spring, Texas. Old Town Spring is a quaint area of shops. There are antiques, gift shops, a few galleries and studios, etc. The Shabby Rose is one of the cute dress shops here. This fall my goal is to do a series of paintings of the older houses that have been renovated here in Old Town. They are full of history and each a little different. So check back with me for future paintings.

Swiss Blue

This vase is called Delft Blue for anyone that is not familiar with it. During the 1750's and on Delft Blue was a popular clay ware that today is very collectable (and also paintable!) made in the Netherlands.

Blue Bird

I love birds and until I am able to live in the country so that I can paint them from "life" or at least get my own photo ops, (:, I guess I will continue to paint them from the collection of ceramic birds that I have.

Fragrant Flight

Fragrant Flight is a 30x20 oil on linen that is in my gallery in Sante Fe, New Mexico, Galerie Esteban. This photo really doesn't do the painting justice. The painting was one of my better paintings I felt. The custom frame on the piece is beautiful. I was particularly drawn to this hydrangea flower and the different colors in each petal. It was gorgeous and I tried my best to capture the true colors. Unfortunately my skills as a photographer are lacking. I need to study how to photograph my work better. Please contact the gallery if you might be interested in this work. Jacque or Tony will be happy to help you.

Memories of Spring

Memories of Spring was a demonstration for my class this March during azelea season. Azelea's are plentiful in March in Houston every year and our yard is a sea of pink. It's a beautiful sight to see.

She knows the Way 7x5

I painted this little painting yesterday afternoon from my photos taken from my recent trip to Provence. The class and I were in a gorgeous field where poppies were growing in front of the church of antiquity, St. Sixte. As I turned to speak to one of the students, I saw this little Sister walking up to the church with her bag in hand. Perfect photo op! She knew exactly where she wanted to go and was not distracted by the field of artists.

Happy is the way I felt when I painted this painting, hence the name. I remember the day. I was at the studio and felt rested. The only thing on my mind that particular day was painting. I started the stereo and there you are. I am so thankful to be able to be an artist. Although most paintings do not come as easily, it's still a joy to go through the process even though the result may have to go in the trash. This one is a little different for me because I usually subdue the colors in the background. This piece just seemed to take it's own course. I hope it works. Have a blessed day!

Pansies-reminders of spring

Pansies are a fun but challenging flower to paint. I love painting them with this flow blue sugar bowl that I have at my studio. This painting reminds me of spring because it gets too hot in Houston for them during the summer. It is very hot right now here in August and we are seeing the first signs of true tropical storms coming our way. I long for cooler temps and more colorful days-

Rose Medley

Roses are probably one of my favorite flowers, if not the most favorite. Not only do they smell great but there is something about them that makes them paintable. They are a challenge though but even so, I love trying. I painted these last year in my former studio space and loved painting it. In fact if it does not sell at the Richard Schmid Fine Art Auction on Sunday September 1, I might just keep the painting for my home or for one of my kids when I am no longer on this earth. (PS I will be painting in heaven where all the roses smell as sweet and the music there is like a rose!) Have a blessed day-
